Introduction
"New Avenues Youth and Community Project is set to
continue the tradition and standards of its predecessor, Avenues
Unlimited, with whom I have many years of valuable and positive
association dating back to the 1980s, first as a user, then as a
volunteer and later in a paid capacity. New Avenues, with its focus on
Spitalfields, one of the most deprived inner city areas in the country,
has successfully embarked on a range of innovative projects aimed at
relieving social exclusion, creating opportunities and raising
confidence for the Bangladeshi and Somali communities. Its emphasis on
drawing in women and young girls within these communities is long
overdue and very welcome. New Avenues has my full support and I look
forward to a long and fruitful partnership with them."

History of the New Avenues Youth and Community
Project
Avenues Unlimited ran under the umbrella
organisation of the YWCA in the area since the mid-sixties. In 2000 the
YWCA withdrew funding from all projects not working exclusively with
women. To maintain the holistic approach to working with women within a
context of the whole community, i.e. including brothers and fathers,
Avenues Unlimited had to decide whether to continue without the YWCA or
to change the focus completely. New Avenues was created as an
independent charity in June 2000 and company limited by guarantee.
Until June 2002, when the Community Fund gave the three year grant, the
project existed on limited funding from various Trusts including the
Spitalfield Market Community Trust, the Wakefield Trust and others. The
project continues to rely on a wide range of funding including a
mainstream grant from London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
